The Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan is deeply concerned with the attack on Hikmatullo Sayfullozoda, the ex-editor-in-chief of the weekly Najot, considers it a deliberate and planned act and strongly condemns it.
The previously imprisoned deputy leader of the IRPT, Muhammadali Hayit, also warned of a possible attempt on his life. However, due to the fact that he is kept in a closed prison, there is no information about his state of health. The attack on Hikmatullo Sayfullozoda indicates that the authorities are carrying out planned and deliberate actions against the imprisoned IRPT members.
According to some reports, Rahmatullo Rajab's health condition is also bad. Due to the fact that there was no dentist in the prison, he was forced to pull out his aching tooth himself. Due to the lack of hygiene products, the socket of the tooth began to fester, which poses a serious threat to his health.
In this regard, the IRPT calls on the authorities:
- Investigate the incident with the attack on Sayfullozoda as soon as possible and to explain through the media the state of his health, as well as the condition of Rahmatullo Rajab.
- Ensure the safety of life and health of all political prisoners without exception.
- Provide international organizations, in particular the International Committee of the Red Cross, with access to prisons.
- Provide prisons with the means of communication to which every citizen has the right, to allow prisoners to have contact with the outside world, especially with the media.
We also call on international human rights organizations, organizations for prevention of torture, journalists' rights defender organizations and others to intervene and put pressure on the Tajik government to ensure that the rights of political prisoners are respected.
It should be noted that on September 9 Reporters Without Borders (RSF) demanded that Hikmatullo Sayfullozoda be released from prison.
The IRPT reiterates that all imprisoned members of this party are innocent and must be released immediately.
